After updating to macOS Tahoe, many users started noticing something weird in Finder. Folder icons would randomly disappear, custom icons would reset back to the default blue folder, and in some cases, nothing you did seemed to bring them back.
At first, it didn’t seem like a big deal; maybe just a glitch or something tied to a specific app like Dropbox. But the more reports started coming in, the clearer it became this wasn’t just a one-off issue. People across different Mac models, especially those on Intel Macs, were running into the same problem. And what made it more frustrating was how inconsistent it felt; some icons would show, others wouldn’t, and sometimes they’d come back after a restar, and then, only to disappear again later.
After digging through multiple user reports and testing a few things myself, it turns out there’s a bit more going on here than just a simple Finder hiccup.
In this article, first I describe the issue and then write fixes you can try.
The issue
Some Mac users say their folder icons just disappear completely. The folders are still there, everything works, but the icon is just… blank. Other Mac users notice that custom icons they’ve been using for years suddenly reset back to the default blue folder. And in some cases, trying to reapply the icon doesn’t work at all, like the system just ignores it.
A lot of people also mention that the problem seems worse with cloud folders–especially Dropbox or Google Drive. Folders with little status badges (like sync icons or alias arrows) are more likely to glitch or not show properly. In a few cases, the icons even flicker or appear for a second and then vanish again, which is honestly pretty confusing.
And then there’s the inconsistency. Some users say a simple restart fixes it (at least temporarily), while others say nothing changes no matter what they try. You might see icons in one folder but not another, even if they’re basically the same type.
Please try these fixes to fix this problem:
1. Restart your Mac
Simple–but it actually fixed the problem for some people.
- Click the Apple menu > Restart
In a few cases, icons came back after a reboot (though sometimes only temporarily).
2. Update to latest macOS Tahoe 26 (Important)
This is the big one for the custom icon issue.
- Go to System Settings > General > Software Update
- Install macOS 26.XX
A lot of users reported that:
- Custom icons came back
- Icon behavior returned to normal
This seems to be the actual fix from Apple, even if it wasn’t clearly mentioned.
3. Turn off App Background Activity for cloud apps (like Dropbox)
This is one of the most commonly reported fixes, especially for missing folder icons in Finder.
- Go to System Settings
- Click General > Login Items & Extensions
- Find App Background Activity
- Turn OFF apps like Dropbox / Google Drive and the like.
- Restart your Mac
Some users said their folder icons came back after doing this, especially for cloud folders.
4. Disable cloud integrations temporarily
Related to Fix #3, but more general. If you’re using Dropbox, Google Drive, or similar:
- Try pausing sync or quitting the app
- Then check if icons return
Some users noticed the issue mostly happens on synced folders.
5. Change folder display (Dock only)
This may only help in specific cases (like folders in the Dock):
- Right-click the folder in the Dock
- Choose Display as Folder instead of Stack
Some users said this makes the correct icon show again.
6. Restart Finder
May not work for you as didn’t work for everyone, but still worth trying:
- Press Command + Option + Esc
- Select Finder
- Click Relaunch
This can refresh icons if it’s just a temporary glitch. Note that there are other ways to restart Finder.
7. Try switching folder view modes
This doesn’t fix the bug directly, but in some cases icons appear in one view and not another.
- Open Finder
- Switch between:
- Icon view
- List view
- Column view
A few users noticed icons showing up differently depending on the view, which is… kinda strange but worth checking.
If above fixes does not help you, restart your Mac in Safe Mode and rebuilding Spotlight Index.
