Many iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users have noticed a frustrating issue: the Photos tab in iMessage conversations is missing, incomplete, or only shows images sent after the update. While the photos are often still inside the conversation if you scroll back, the convenient tab that collected them all under Info has vanished for some people.
If you open Messages, go into an iMessage thread, and tap the contact’s name at the top, you’ll see multiple tabs such as Info, Backgrounds, Photos, Links, and Locations. These tabs make it easy to quickly find the content you’ve shared in that conversation. These tabs will only appear if there is content under them, as you send and receive photos, links, or locations. Audio messages appear somewhere else.
The issue:
- The Messages app needs to rebuild its index of attachments after an update, restore, or new iPhone setup. Until that finishes, the Photos tab may be missing or incomplete.
- Storage data often shows that the photos and videos are still on your device or in iCloud—they’re just not linked into the Photos tab.
- Apple says that when you set up iCloud for Messages, your messages are stored in the cloud, with only the most recently accessed messages kept locally on your device. Apple also notes that your messages, along with their photos and other attachments, count toward your iCloud storage.
- Behavior is inconsistent: some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners see the Photos tab right away, while others don’t.
How to fix:
1) Check these first:
- Stay connected: Leave your iPhone on Wi-Fi and charging for several hours or overnight so indexing and syncing can finish.
- Check storage: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages to ensure your attachments are still there.
- Keep Messages forever: In Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages, select Forever if you want long-term access. You may be able to recover deleted messages as well.
- Don’t delete old threads: removing a conversation takes its attachments with it. But if you have already deleted one, do not assume it is gone. Apple documents that you can restore messages you deleted for up to 30 days: in the Messages conversation list, tap the filter button, tap Recently Deleted, select the conversations you want back, tap Recover, then tap Recover Messages. If you use Messages in iCloud, recovering on your iPhone recovers on every device where Messages in iCloud is on. Apple notes that any message that you remove from a conversation using Undo Send is permanently deleted, and that audio messages that expire before being saved aren’t recoverable.
2) Download attachments from info:
- Open a conversation in Messages.
- Tap the name or chevron (>) at the top.
- Scroll down—if you see Download … Attachments, tap it.
- Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charging while it downloads.
- Note: Some people don’t see this option at first—it may appear after syncing or a restart.
3) Reset Search Index for Messages:
- Go to Settings > Search.
- Find Messages.
- Turn off all toggles (like Show App in Search and Show Content in Search), wait ~10 seconds, then turn them back on.
- Reopen Messages and give it 24–48 hours.
This forces iOS to re-index Messages and often makes the Photos tab reappear with the missing images.
4) Force iCloud Messages sync:
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, tap See All, then tap Messages in iCloud.
- Turn on Use on this iPhone (if off).
Leave the iPhone plugged in and on Wi-Fi. Large libraries may take days to finish, and syncing can pause—resume it if needed.
5) Restart after Sync:
Several users reported success when they:
- Pressed Sync Now in iCloud Messages.
- Used Download Attachments in a thread.
- Then did a full restart of the iPhone and left it overnight on Wi-Fi and charging.
- By the next day, the Photos tab was back.
6) Force-Load by scrolling:
- Use Search in Messages to find an older photo.
- Tap it to jump to that spot in the thread.
- Slowly scroll through the conversation.
- As you scroll, older photos may start loading into the tab.
7) Use Search as a workaround:
If the Photos tab is gone, try this:
- In the Messages search bar, type the contact name followed by the word photos.
- This will list images shared with that contact, even if the tab is missing.
