Facebook has become the world’s social network of choice. It’s, by far, the most popular social media app, with over 3 billion monthly active users as of Oct 2023. We’re sure many of you are using Facebook to communicate with just about everyone. This is why Facebook not working on your iPhone after iOS 17 update may be more than annoying. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of solutions for Facebook not working after iOS17 update. Without further ado, let’s troubleshoot your iOS 17 Facebook problem!

How to fix Facebook not working after iOS 17 update

Close and reopen Facebook app

Facebook may have stopped working after iOS 17 update due to a minor software glitch. Closing and reopening the app might fix the problem. Here’s how:

  1. Swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the app switcher.
  2. Find Facebook and slide it all the way up.
  3. Navigate to the home screen and reopen the Facebook app. Does it work now? If not move on to the next step.

Update Facebook app

The Facebook app may not be optimized to work with the latest version of iOS 17. To fix this, ensure you’re running the latest app version. Here’s how:

  1. Open App Store.
  2. Tap on your profile icon at the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down until you see your available updates. Check if Facebook has one, and hit Update next to it.
  4. You can also tap on Update All to take care of all updates in one sweep.

Update your iPhone

Make sure that your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS 17. You can update your iPhone wirelessly by following the steps below:

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Go into General.
  3. Hit Software Update.

Check your Internet connection

Another reason for Facebook not working after iOS 17 update might be that your internet is down. Make sure that your iPhone has a Wi-Fi connection or a cellular data connection. Likewise, a VPN connection may also cause this problem. Please try these troubleshooting steps to see if they help you:

  • If you are using a VPN service, turn off VPN by going to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN. Does Facebook work when VPN is disabled?
  • Restart your Wi-Fi modem/router. Unplug the power cord from your modem/router. Wait about one minute. Then replug the cord.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone by going to Settings > Airplane Mode. Wait a minute, then turn off Airplane Mode.
  • If you’re trying to use Facebook over cellular, ensure that Use Cellular Data is on for Facebook. Go to Settings > Cellular Data to check this.

Check the app’s network permissions

If you have a strong internet connection and everything else seems OK, Facebook not working might be due to permission issues. Ensure you’re allowing the social network to access all it needs from your phone to function correctly. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Facebook.
  3. Under Allow Facebook To Access, make sure everything is enabled.

Restart your iPhone

Oh, the good ol’ restart solution. Doing this fixes about 90% of all my tech problems. Try restarting the device when Facebook stopped working after iOS 17 update. This often gets things back up and running.

To restart iPhone Xr, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, or iPhone 15:

  1. Press and hold onto the Side and volume up buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Use the slide to power off slider.
  3. When the device is turned off, press and hold the side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

To restart iPhone SE (2nd generation) or iPhone SE (3rd generation):

  1. Press and hold onto the power button for a few seconds.
  2. Use the slide to power off slider.
  3. When the device is turned off, press and hold the side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Check if Facebook is down

You might not be the only one having problems with Facebook! If the social network isn’t working for you, maybe it’s a site-wide issue. You could try to use Facebook using another device, and see if it’s working elsewhere. Otherwise, you can check on a website like Down Detector, which will let you know if there’s a problem with Facebook. If there is, you can do nothing but wait it out.

Delete and reinstall Facebook

  1. Find the Facebook app. Tap and hold onto it for a couple or few seconds.
  2. Tap on Remove App.
  3. Hit Delete App.
  4. Go to the App Store and re-download Facebook.
