Many Mac users say Safari’s Bookmarks sidebar switched from a compact, one-line tree to a tall card-style list showing favicons, URLs and descriptions after macOS Tahoe update. The result: fewer bookmarks visible at once and a lot more scrolling. In this article, I explain how to bring back a compact, hierarchical list.

In Safari, bookmarks are shortcuts that let you quickly return to your favorite or frequently visited websites. You can easily create, edit bookmarks on your Mac.

Switch Safari sidebar to Compact (list) on Mac

1. Open Safari on your Mac

2. Show the sidebar: Shift–Command–L (or View > Show Sidebar, or click the Sidebar icon).

3. Click Bookmarks

4. Click the More (…) icon at the top right.

5. Select Compact.

Your bookmarks return to a one-line, tree-style list.

If you want to revert back to the original, then select Large.

Notes:

  • The Compact toggle/option lives in the Bookmarks header’s … menu (not in Safari Settings).
  • This setting affects Bookmarks. The Recently Saved (see the screenshot below) section can still show large thumbnails; switch back to Bookmarks to use the compact list for everyday navigation.
