Many iPhone 18 Pro users have noticed something alarming: their contacts have disappeared. For some, only a handful remain; for others, all the names are gone and only phone numbers are showing. A few users even reported losing their Apple Account picture and contact posters.
This isn’t an isolated problem — Apple Support Community threads and Reddit discussions show that it’s affecting people across different iPhone models, especially those syncing contacts with iCloud.
The Issue
- On some devices, only a small portion of contacts remain while the rest disappear.
- In other cases, names are missing but the phone numbers are still there, especially in the Messages app.
- Some report that if they start typing a name in a new text, the contact details appear briefly, but once the message is sent, the name reverts to just a number.
- People who store contacts in Outlook or Gmail accounts often keep their lists intact, while those relying on iCloud contacts are affected more severely.
- Others say they contacted support and were advised to manually re-enter contacts and wait for a future update to resolve the issue.
It appears that most of the missing contacts were synced with iCloud, not stored in Gmail or Outlook.
Fixes You Can Try
Here are some things worth trying if your contacts went missing on iPhone 18 Pro:
A. Check iCloud Contacts Settings
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Contacts.
- Make sure it’s toggled On. If it already is, toggle it Off, restart your iPhone, and toggle it back On.
B. Confirm Your Default Account
- Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts.
- Make sure iCloud (or the account where you normally store contacts) is turned on. If they are already on, turn it off and then on.
- Some users noticed this option disappeared entirely — which seems to be part of the bug.
C. Restore Contacts from iCloud Data Recovery
- On a computer, Mac or PC, sign in to iCloud.com.
- Click the multiple dots icon to open the Settings menu and go to Data Recovery > Restore Contacts.
- Pick an archive from before the update.
- Note: Only the last few archives are available, and restoring may overwrite recent changes.
D. Sign Out and Back Into iCloud
- Go to Settings > [your name] > Sign Out.
- Restart your iPhone, then sign back in.
- This sometimes refreshes sync.

E. Try a Backup Restore

Check to see if your Outlook, Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo, school, or work accounts need you to sign in again, in Contacts settings:
- Open Settings
- Go to Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts
- Open each connected account one by one
- Sign back into any account showing authentication problems
- Make sure the “Contacts” toggle is enabled.
