Siri can read out notifications you receive from apps like Messages on supported through compatible earbuds, your iDevice’s speaker, or CarPlay. You can reply using your voice without needing to say “Hey Siri.”

Announce Notifications also work with supported third-party apps.

Having Siri announce notifications certainly makes my jogging sessions more pleasant. Instead of glancing at my Apple Watch or iPhone, I simply have my AirPods read them to me. This way, I only interrupt my workout if it’s an urgent matter that can’t really wait. Otherwise, I stay up to date with the incoming alerts without having to take a look every few minutes.

Some users have reported that Siri doesn’t announce notifications after the latest iOS 17 update. There are two versions of this problem:

  • Siri doesn’t announce notifications on AirPods or Beats headphones after iOS update.
  • Siri doesn’t announce notifications on iPhone or iPad speaker after iOS update.

Below I’ll help you fix both of these problems. Let’s get started.

If Siri is not announcing notifications on AirPods or Beats headphones:

1. Make sure that you’re using compatible headsets

You can have Siri announce your incoming notifications with these headphones:

  • AirPods Max
  • AirPods (2nd generation) or later
  • AirPods Pro (1st generation) or later
  • Beats Fit Pro
  • Powerbeats
  • Powerbeats Pro
  • Beats Solo Pro

2. Make sure your headphones are connected to your iPhone

Make sure that your AirPods or your compatible Beats headphones are paired to your iPhone. Siri reads your incoming notifications out loud when your headphones are connected to your iPhone or iPad and you’re wearing them,.

3. Make sure Announce Notifications is turned on

  1. Start the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. iPhone notification option in settings

  4. Under "‌Siri‌," select Announce Notifications.
  5. Toggle the switch next to Announce Notifications to the green ON position.
  6. Have Siri read out notifications settings on iPhone.

  7. If Announce Notifications is already turned on, turn it off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.

4. Make sure announced notifications is turned on for your headphones

  1. Start the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Under "‌Siri‌," select Announce Notifications.
  4. Under the "Announce When Connected To" section, toggle the switch next to Headphones to the green ON position.

5. Make sure your apps are allowed to announce notifications

If Siri is still not announcing notifications, make sure your apps are allowed to notify you. Here’s how to check:

  1. Start the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Under Siri, select Announce Notifications.
  4. Make sure the Announce Notifications switch is toggled on.
  5. Under Announce Notifications From section, tap an app you want Siri to announce notifications from.
  6. Toggle the switch next to Announce Notifications to the green ON position.

6. Make sure your device is locked

Make sure that your iPhone or iPad is locked and its screen is dark. Siri doesn’t announce messages if you’re using your device.

7. Turn your iPhone off and back on again

Anytime you are troubleshooting a problem, it helps to restart the system and see if that fixes the issue. If Siri still won’t announce notifications, restart your iPhone and then check if the problem is resolved.

If Siri is not announcing notifications through your iPhone’s speaker:

Make sure Announce Notifications on Speaker is turned on

If you don’t own a compatible pair of headphones, then you can still have Siri announce notifications through the speaker of your iPhone or iPad.

To set Siri to announce notifications through the iPhone’s or iPad’s speaker, follow the steps below.

  1. Start the Settings app on your ‌iPhone‌ or iPad.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the "General" section and select Siri.
  4. Scroll down to the "Spoken Responses" section and toggle on the switch next to Announce Notifications on Speaker.
  5. Have Siri announce notifications on speaker

Once you’ve enabled Announce Notifications on Speaker, a new Announce Notifications menu will appear where you can independently select which apps ‌Siri‌ should announce notifications from.

This additional menu also includes options to Announce When Connected to Headphones, as well as an option that allows ‌Siri‌ to send replies to notifications that support them without first reading back the message for you to confirm (Reply Without Confirmation).
