Wireless charging is the charging technology that first became available with the iPhone 8. Some users have had trouble charging their iPhone 14 Plus with their wireless chargers. Users affected by these difficulties report that although their device is properly placed on the wireless charger, their iPhone 14 Plus is not charging wirelessly. In this article, we will give some troubleshooting tips to deal with iPhone 14 Plus wireless charging issues.

Why the iPhone 14 Plus has trouble with wireless chargers

The camera bump on the iPhone 14 Pro is especially large. Wireless (Qi) chargers depend on your iPhone being very close to the charging pad, and the large camera bump can prevent the back of your iPhone from getting close enough.

Exactly how well your iPhone 14 Plus will charge can depend on:

  • The wireless charger itself — the quality of the charger and the shape of the charging pad.
  • The orientation of your iPhone.
  • The case you are using on your iPhone. Many factors can come in here, including the thickness of the case, how deep the camera lens protection is and the shape of the case.

Wireless charging test results

I tried out four different wireless (non-MagSafe) chargers with five different cases from various case companies.

The four chargers included:

  • Two upright desktop/tabletop chargers.
  • One charger that is built into a desktop.
  • One wireless car charger.

The cases were from Insignia, OtterBox and Speck. They include MagSafe and non-MagSafe cases, various thicknesses/drop ratings and one with a built-in PopSocket.

Charger 1

This (not a well-known brand) desktop charger seemed to be the most likely to fail when charging my iPhone 14 Plus.

Case Thickness Cost PopSocket MagSafe Charging
1 Thick \[$$ | No | Yes | Works except in Landscape orientation. |
| 2 | Slim | $ | No | No | Works for all orientations except upright. |
| 3 | Medium | $\]
No Yes Works in all orientations.
4 Medium $$ No No Nothing.
5 Slim $$$ Yes No Nothing.

Charger 2

This (also not a well-known brand) desktop charger worked a little more reliably than Charger 1. Although I was able to charge using all five cases, many of these required careful phone placement.

Case Thickness Cost PopSocket MagSafe Charging
1 Thick \[$$ | No | Yes | Works in all orientations. |
| 2 | Slim | $ | No | No | Works in all orientations. |
| 3 | Medium | $\]
No Yes Works in all orientations.
4 Medium $$ No No Works in all orientations.
5 Slim $$$ Yes No Works in all orientations with the PopTop detached and in a couple of orientations with the PopTop.

Charger 3

This charger is built into a desk, and so orientation doesn’t matter.

Case Thickness Cost PopSocket MagSafe Charging
1 Thick \[$$ | No | Yes | Works. |
| 2 | Slim | $ | No | No | Works. |
| 3 | Medium | $\]
No Yes Works.
4 Medium $$ No No Works.
5 Slim $$$ Yes No Nothing — with or without the PopTop.

If you are having trouble charging your iPhone 14 Plus wirelessly, there are a few things you can try.

Fixes for wireless charging not working on iPhone 14 Plus

1. Make sure your wireless charger is plugged in properly

The first troubleshooting step is to make sure your accessory is plugged in properly. This may sound obvious, but it’s something to check before trying any other solutions. A loose connection between the power outlet and wireless charger can be the reason why your iPhone 14 Plus is not charging wirelessly.

2. Make sure your socket is working

Make sure that your Qi wireless charger is plugged into an outlet or power strip that’s working. Try plugging the charger into multiple outlets.

3. Make Sure your Charger is Qi-Enabled

Make sure your wireless charger is a Qi-enabled accessory from a reputable brand. Wireless chargers that don’t support Qi, or shoddy options from sketchy companies, may not work with your iPhone 14 Plus.

Although some of the wireless (non-MagSafe) chargers I tested worked well with the iPhone 14 Plus, the best bet for charging your iPhone 14 Plus wirelessly is a MagSafe charger. There are many good options from both Apple and third-party sellers. The design of these chargers is a small puck that attaches to your iPhone. The smaller size means that the camera bump shouldn’t be an issue, and you won’t have to fiddle with your iPhone’s placement on the charger — it will just snap into place.

  • If you purchase a MagSafe charging puck, you can use a non-MagSafe case on your iPhone, but your iPhone won’t "stick" to the MagSafe charger and so it may lose its charging connection if it gets bumped. The non-MagSafe cases I tested worked okay for charging when the phone was correctly placed on the puck.
  • Certainly for the kind of chargers that hold your iPhone up using MagSafe, you will need a MagSafe case so that your iPhone doesn’t slide off of the charger.

4. Make sure your iPhone is properly aligned on the wireless charging pad

You may not realize this but an improper alignment of the phone on a wireless charging pad can be the reason why your iPhone 14 Plus won’t charge wirelessly. Make sure your iPhone 14 Plus is placed properly on the charging pad. How you place your iPhone on a wireless charger is, arguably, the most important thing you’ll want to keep in mind when using Qi-based solutions.

To put it in layman’s terms, Qi uses a charging coil to wirelessly transfer energy to your device. But these coils can be finicky. If your iPhone 13 isn’t properly aligned with the charging pad’s coils, then you could run into problems.

If your iPhone 14 Plus is too far away from the charging coil, then charging speeds may end up being ridiculously slow. Similarly, if the coil and iPhone aren’t aligned properly, charging may not take place at all. Worse still, you may even get a charging ”ping” or see the charging indicator working normally — even if the device isn’t charging. More likely than not, this is why many users wake up to half-charged devices.

If nothing works:

  • Try using a different orientation for your phone:
  • Try upside down
1 Try landscape orientation on the left or the right side.

5. Restart your iPhone

When in doubt, restart your iPhone.
In many cases, glitchy or buggy behavior can be easily rectified by a simple restart. That’s the case for the iPhone 14 Plus wireless charging feature, too. If you’re running into problems wirelessly charging your iPhone 14 Plus, you may want to power down your iPhone. Many users have reported that restarting their device helped them fix iPhone 14 Plus wireless charging problem. You can restart your iPhone by following the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Shut Down.

6. Force restart your iphone

If your iPhone 14 Plus becomes unresponsive whenever you place it on your charging pad, then you might need to perform a hard reset.

  1. Press and quickly release volume up button.
  2. Press and quickly release volume down. button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

7. Update your iPhone

If your iPhone 14 Plus is still not charging on a wireless charger, then you need to check for iOS update. Apple routinely patches software bugs that could inhibit wireless charging. Even if you aren’t actively experiencing charging issues, you’ll want to install the latest available software whenever you can.

  1. Start the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap General
  3. Select Software update
  4. If an update is available, tap Download and install

8. Take off your iPhone case if you are using one

Take off those thick iPhone cases before charging. This is because it could be one reason as to why your iPhone 14 Plus is not charging wirelessly. In theory, only metal cases will interfere with Qi-based wireless charging. But in practice, sometimes thicker plastic cases can cause problems, too.

Particularly thick iPhone 14 Plus cases, like LifeProof or Otterbox, can inhibit wireless charging because of the distance they create between an iPhone and a charging coil. That may lead to slower charging speeds or wireless charging that doesn’t work at all.

More than that, some cases can inhibit an iPhone’s ability to stay cool while charging. Heat isn’t the best thing for electronics — and if your device is overheating while charging, it could reduce your battery’s lifespan.

If the connection keeps going in and out, try taking off your iPhone’s case, so its back rests directly on the wireless charger.

9. My iPhone 14 Plus Is Wirelessly Charging Slowly

This can be an issue with any charger, wired or not. Make sure that your wireless charging pad is plugged in to a strong enough power source. Try plugging the charger into multiple outlets.

This problem commonly occurs when your wireless charger is connected to a USB port on a laptop or desktop computer. The ports on these devices are not able to supply strong electrical current into the iPhone 13. For the fastest results, plug the charging pad into a wall charger.

10. Factory reset your iPhone

If you find your iPhone 14 Plus completely unresponsive when you place it on the wireless charging pad, you may need to try the factory data reset method. The method will restore all the iPhone’s settings to their original form and clears every data of your iPhone. So, we urge you to backup your iPhone before performing this step. This method can temporarily fix the wireless charging not working on iPhone 14 Plus problem.

Here’s how to hard reset iPhone:

  • Head to Settings
  • Next, tap on General
  • Now, tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  • Now, tap on Erase All Content & Settings

Now check if your iPhone 14 Plus is charging wirelessly. If it doesn’t, then you might need to put your iPhone in DFU mode. It is worth mentioning that the factory data reset option can fix iPhone not charging problems too.

11. DFU restore your iPhone 14 Plus

If iPhone 14 Plus wireless charging issues persist and you suspect it could still be a software bug, then you may want to perform a DFU Restore. This is one of the deepest “resets” you can carry out on an iPhone. Just

Here’s how to DFU restore your iPhone 14 Plus:

  • At first, make sure to connect your iPhone 14 Plus to a computer
  • Now, press the Volume up and Volume down button quickly, one after another
  • Then, hold the side key until the iPhone’s screen goes black
  • Next, hold the Side button and Volume down button simultaneously
  • After 5 seconds, release the Side button and continue holding the Volume down button until your iPhone appears on iTunes or Finder
  • If your screen goes black, your iPhone is in DFU mode.

12. Get a New Charger

If you’re still experiencing problems with wireless charging on your iPhone 14 Plus, there may be a damaged component or hardware issue with your device.

Also, there is a high chance that your wireless charger is damaged. If you just purchased it, try contacting the customer support of the company you purchased it from to see if you can get a free replacement. You may want to try a different wireless charger unit to see if it works before reaching out to the customer support.
