Members of the Apple Beta Software Program, Customer Seed Program, and Apple Developer Program can try iOS 27 beta releases. If you installed iOS 27 Beta or iPadOS 27 Beta through Apple’s Developer Program or Software Beta Program, you may decide you want to downgrade because of usability or stability issues. Keep reading to learn how it’s done.
Apple’s beta versions of its major software updates can be notoriously buggy, especially the early releases. You may find apps not working properly, poor battery life, device crashes, and features that don’t do what they’re supposed to. Fortunately, you can restore your iPhone or iPad to the previous version of iOS.

If you made an archived backup before you installed the iOS 27 beta, you can remove the beta and restore the backup. If you didn’t make a backup, you can still downgrade, but you won’t be able to restore your device to its original state before you upgraded.
Also, bear in mind that if you’ve installed watchOS 27 on your Apple Watch, you won’t be able to use it with your iPhone once you’ve gone back to iOS 26. And downgrading an Apple Watch to a previous version of watchOS can’t be done manually either – if you want to remove watchOS 27, you’ll have to send your watch in to Apple.
Stop receiving iOS 27 betas
To stop receiving iOS 27 betas on iPhone models with iOS 16.4 or later:

How to Downgrade From iOS 27 Beta
To remove the iOS 27 beta and install the current publicly released version of iOS 26, you need to erase and restore your iPhone.
If you have an archived backup, after erasing and restoring your iPhone, you can set your device up from that backup.
Backups created while using beta software might not be compatible with earlier versions of iOS. If you don’t have an older backup that you made using the current version of iOS, you might not be able to restore your device with your most recent backup.
- Make sure that your computer has the latest version of macOS or the latest version of Apple Devices.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer, then put your device in recovery mode with these steps:
- Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then, press and hold the side button until you see the recovery mode screen.
- Click the Restore option when it appears. This erases your device and installs the current non-beta version of iOS 26. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then repeat step 2.
- Wait for the restore to finish. If asked, sign in to your Apple Account, which disables Activation Lock.
After the restore finishes, you can set up your device from your archived backup, which must be from an earlier version of iOS.
If you back up a device that has iOS beta to iCloud or your computer, the backup won’t work with earlier versions of iOS. For example, if you go back to iOS 26 from iOS 27 beta, a backup you made while using iOS beta won’t restore. Instead, restore from a backup that you made before you installed iOS 27 beta.
Update when a new version of iOS is available
If your iPhone indicates a software update is available, the iOS 27 beta version on your device has expired. You need to update:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Install the update.
