I was recently having this problem on my iPhone 18 Pro. At home, where I would normally want to be connected to my Wi-Fi, my iPhone 18 Pro kept switching from Wi-Fi to cellular. This isn’t a problem for me due to cellular data usage, but rather, some of the things I do require my iPhone to be connected to Wi-Fi. For example, the following require iPhone to be connected to Wi-Fi:
- Controlling smart home apps: For example, I can’t control my Hue lights if my phone is not on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Using Continuity Camera: You can use your iPhone as a webcam for your Mac during FaceTime or Zoom meetings.
- Wireless printing: AirPrint looks for printers on the same Wi-Fi network.
If this is a problem for you, this article offers several things you can try.
How to stop your iPhone 18 Pro switching from Wi-Fi to cellular
Try the following, in order, until your problem is resolved.
1. Restart
To restart your iPhone 18 Pro:
- Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off.
- To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.
2. Turn off Connectivity Assist
Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps include making sure that Connectivity Assist is off. You can always turn this back on later.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Scroll down and tap the slider for Connectivity Assist to turn it off.
3. Choose a different Data Mode
You can easily change your Data Mode on your iPhone 18 Pro. Apple documents that with Allow More Data on 5G, your iPhone can automatically use 5G instead of Wi-Fi when Wi-Fi connectivity is slow or insecure on a network you visit occasionally.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Cellular and then tap Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Data Mode.
- Choose Standard or Low Data Mode instead of Allow More Data on 5G.
Apple describes the other two options this way. Standard allows automatic updates and background tasks on cellular, and uses standard quality settings for video and FaceTime; this is generally the default mode. Low Data Mode helps reduce Wi-Fi and cellular-data usage by pausing automatic updates and background tasks.
4. Keep one network on Wi-Fi
If you would rather leave Allow More Data on 5G turned on, Apple gives you a per-network switch. To turn this feature off and on for a certain network, open the Settings app and tap Wi-Fi. Tap the info button next to the Wi-Fi network and tap Use Wi-Fi for Internet.
5. Turn off Cellular Data
You can temporarily turn off Cellular Data. You will probably want this on while you are out, but while you are at home, you can have it turned off. If cellular data is off, all data services—including email, web browsing, and notifications—use Wi-Fi only.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap the slider next to Cellular Data to turn cellular data on or off.
6. Reset Network Settings
This one can be a last resort. Resetting your network settings causes all network settings to be removed, including your home, work, and school network configurations.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings. This resets all Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings.
