YouTube is the largest online video platform globally, with more than 2.7 billion monthly active users. YouTube not working after iOS 17 update translates to a problem for most of us. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of solutions for YouTube not working after iOS17 update. Without further ado, let’s troubleshoot your iOS 17 YouTube problem!

How to fix YouTube not working after iOS 17 update

Close and reopen YouTube app

Simply closing and reopening the YouTube app often fixes any local issues or bugs.

  1. Swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the app switcher.
  2. Find YouTube and slide it all the way up.
  3. Navigate to the home screen and reopen the YouTube app. Does it work now? If not move on to the next step.

Update YouTube app

Running older versions of an app is usually not an issue, but it can sometimes create some conflicts. This is especially true with more extensive updates, or upgrades that include server-side changes. Make sure you’re running the latest version of YouTube.

  1. Open App Store.
  2. Tap on your profile icon at the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down until you see your available updates. Check if YouTube has one, and hit Update next to it.
  4. You can also tap on Update All to take care of all updates in one sweep.

Update your iPhone

If updating YouTube doesn’t resolve your issue, then try updating your iPhone.

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Go into General.
  3. Hit Software Update.

Check your Internet connection

Another reason for YouTube not working after iOS 17 update might be that your internet is down. Make sure that your iPhone has a Wi-Fi connection or a cellular data connection. Likewise, a VPN connection may also cause this problem. Please try these troubleshooting steps to see if they help you:

  • If you are using a VPN service, turn off VPN by going to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN. Does YouTube work when VPN is disabled?
  • Restart your Wi-Fi modem/router. Unplug the power cord from your modem/router. Wait about one minute. Then replug the cord.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone by going to Settings > Airplane Mode. Wait a minute, then turn off Airplane Mode.
  • If you’re trying to use YouTube over cellular, ensure that Use Cellular Data is on for YouTube. Go to Settings > Cellular Data to check this.

Check the app’s network permissions

If you have a strong internet connection and everything else seems OK, YouTube not working might be due to permission issues. Ensure you’re allowing the social network to access all it needs from your phone to function correctly. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on YouTube.
  3. Under Allow YouTube To Access, make sure everything is enabled.

Restart your iPhone

It’s always the first troubleshooting solution we recommend! A simple restart can quickly fix your iOS 17 YouTube problem. It may seem silly, but it’s worth a try!

To restart iPhone Xr, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, or iPhone 15:

  1. Press and hold onto the Side and volume up buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. Use the slide to power off slider.
  3. When the device is turned off, press and hold the side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

To restart iPhone SE (2nd generation) or iPhone SE (3rd generation):

  1. Press and hold onto the power button for a few seconds.
  2. Use the slide to power off slider.
  3. When the device is turned off, press and hold the side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Check if YouTube is down

While it’s not a common occurrence, YouTube can sometimes go down. This is the first thing you should check. There is no straightforward way to check if YouTube’s servers are non-operational, but we recommend a couple of methods.

You can get the info straight from the horse’s mouth by going to the official YouTube X account. Chances are any outage will be reported there.

We also recommend Down Detector, a website where people can report issues with YouTube not working. The site is almost always spot-on, and it even includes a live map to see if there are any local outages.

If YouTube is down, you can do nothing but wait it out.

Sync your date and time

It may seem odd, but the date and time settings could be a reason for YouTube not working after iOS 17 update. Google’s servers might be having trouble syncing with them if you don’t set them correctly.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Date & Time.
  4. Make sure Set Automatically is toggled on.

Delete and reinstall YouTube

If, after all these steps, the YouTube app is still not working, then it’s time to delete and reinstall the app. This may help because sometimes data and settings get corrupted, or bugs mess things up. Reinstalling the app lets you start clean.

  1. Find the YouTube app on your iPhone. Tap and hold onto it for a couple or few seconds.
  2. Tap on Remove App.
  3. Hit Delete App.
  4. Go to the App Store and re-download YouTube.
