Apple Mail’s search has been broken for years, and everyone knows it. But in iOS 27, Mail search finally works.
In iOS 27, Mail includes a completely rebuilt Mail search with features such as a new on-device index, relevance ranking and the ability to reindex old emails. The emails you know exist but can never find? Your iPhone will finally be able to surface them.
What’s changing with iOS 27’s Mail search?
Apple acknowledged the inconsistent search results that regularly flummox iPhone and Mac users as they look for an elusive email. To fix the longstanding problem, the company said it completely revamped on-device search for this year’s operating system upgrades.
"We’ve all had that moment where you search for something you know is there, but it just won’t show up," said Stacey Ford, Apple’s vice president of OS program management, during WWDC26 keynote. "So on iOS, iPadOS and macOS, we’ve rebuilt the foundation of search that powers Spotlight, Photos and Mail."
With iOS 27, Apple will introduce a persistent, device-side catalog that will give Mail insights into your inbox. This will replace the incomplete local cache the app relied on for so many years.
Why iOS 27 Mail search works better
iOS 27 has an overhauled search system that extends to the Mail app. Instead of surfacing results based on keywords and recency, Mail app search ranks results by relevance and intent.
"We rearchitected the index so it’s more stable, more efficient, and more comprehensive of content, both old and new," Ford said.
Plus, the Mail app’s new ranking system will reward relevance over recency. Apple says its goal is to bring "the most relevant results to the top to help you find what you need right away — even if it’s buried deep in your inbox."
In iOS 27, when you open Mail search, you’ll see a banner labeled "Expanded Search Results." This is the app’s way of indicating that it will now search by intent rather than just relying on keywords. For example, if you search for "dentist," it should show an email from your dental clinic even if the word did not appear in the mail. Similarly, if you search for "Sprouts" because you want to find a recent order, it’ll show your order before it shows marketing emails you might have from the same retailer.
Why Mail search isn’t working after updating to iOS 27
If you install iOS 27 and Mail search returns zero or wrong results, nothing is broken.
The main reason Mail search is not working right after installing iOS 27 update is that iOS has not indexed your entire mailbox yet. When you search Mail, it won’t spend time digging through all your information; instead, it checks an index that’s been specifically designed to build all the necessary semantic connections between your data. This allows Mail to come up with impressively fast responses. But it can only do this once that index has been built.
Anyone who has installed iOS 27 knows that might take a while. You can check whether the indexing process has completed by opening Settings. On devices still indexing, a banner says:

You can use your iPhone as you normally would. Indexing improves search and can take a while. Longer charging sessions help indexing go faster.
In other words, the fix is to leave the iPhone plugged in and wait. Once indexing completes, the emails that wouldn’t surface on day one start showing up.

What devices will the new Spotlight and Mail search work on?
Will the Mail app’s improved search features come to all iPhones, Macs and iPads? Your device will need to be capable of running this year’s new operating systems. But it doesn’t look like it will require hardware that supports all the new Apple Intelligence features.
