If you find yourself needing to type a trademark symbol, copyright symbol, or registered symbol on the iPhone or iPad, you can do so easily using either of the two methods below.

The first trick to typing the trademark symbol “™”, the registered symbol, “®”, or the copyright symbol “©” will utilize the text replacement feature on an iPhone or iPad, and the second trick uses the Emoji keyboard to type the same special character symbols.

Typing Trademark, Copyright, Symbols on iOS with text replacement

The simplest way to type the trademark, copyright and other symbols on an iPhone or iPad is to use the text replacement feature.

  1. Copy the copyright © , trademark ™ , or the registered ® symbol from here or some other site.
  2. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and go to General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
  3. Tap the plus button.
  4. Under Phrase, paste the copied copyright ©, trademark ™, or the registered ® symbol.
  5. Under Shortcut, type a short, relevant word.
For instance, for the copyright symbol, you can put copr as the shortcut. Copr isn’t a real word; thus, whenever you type copr, it will automatically enter the © symbol. You can also use a real word, like copyright, as the shortcut, but then every time you type copyright, your iPhone will automatically replace the word with the © symbol. So, it’s best to use a short, random string of alphabets as the shortcut. For trademark, you could use trdm, and for registered, you can use regis.
  6. Tap Save. Now, you can repeat the above steps to add text replacement for all the desired symbols.
  7. Open a text field like the Notes app and type the shortcut (copr, or whatever you entered in step 5). The moment you tap the space bar, it will change to the appropriate symbol (© in this example).

Note that Text Replacements sync via iCloud to all your Apple devices. So, whenever you type the shortcut on your iPhone, it will also enter the special character there.

Typing Trademark, Copyright Symbols on iPhone and iPad with Emoji

Another option to type the various copyright, trademark and registered symbols is to use the Emoji keyboard, yes the same Emoji keyboard with all the goofy faces. First you must enable the Emoji keyboard on the iPhone or iPad if you have not done so already, the rest is easy:

  1. Open the app where you want to type the trademark, copyright symbols
  2. Tap the smiley face button to access the Emoji keyboard
  3. Swipe through the Emoji options until you get to the ‘Symbols’ section where you will find the trademark symbol “™”, the registered symbol, “®”, or the copyright symbol “©”.
Alternatively, you can type copyright, registered trademark, or trademark into the Search Emoji field.
  4. .
type copyright trademark or registered in search emoji field

  5. Tap the copyright, registered trademark, or trademark symbol to add it.
  6. tap copyright trademark or registered symbol

Don’t worry, tapping on one of the trademark or copyright emoji symbols will render the symbol in text, not as an emoji.

Option 3 for typing trademark symbol “™”, the registered symbol, “®”, or the copyright symbol “©” : Copy & Paste

A third option would be to use the iOS Copy & Paste function to copy the symbols and then paste them into the location where you want to type them, though that really shouldn’t be necessary if you use either the text replacement method or the emoji keyboard method.
