When you try to log into Facebook or Messenger on your iPhone or iPad, you may experience the following error message:

Login Failed. Sorry, an unexpected error occurred. Please try again later. Error code: 2

It appears that this problem affects all users who are trying to access Facebook from a web browser, or who are using the Facebook app. This issue occurs when you have network connection problems. More specifically, you may run into this error message when iPhone or iPad is unable to connect to the Facebook servers.

In this article, we explain how you can fix this problem.

Fix Facebook sign-in error 2

Close and reopen the app

Sometimes, apps can go out of whack, and something as simple as closing the app or website, and reopening it, might fix the problem.

How to Force close the Facebook app on iPhone:

  • On an iPhone with Face ID, go to your Home screen and swipe up. This will open the App Switcher.
  • To open the App Switcher on an iPhone with a Home button, double press the home button.
  • Find Facebook. You may swipe left or right to find it.
  • Then swipe up on the Facebook’s preview icon.
  • Now open Facebook again to see if you have fixed your problem.

Check for app updates

Sometimes, having an older version of an application may cause issues. If the error persist, you want to ensure you’re running the latest app version. Head to the App Store and check for any available updates. Get the latest version and check if this Facebook error is fixed.

How to update the Facebook app on iPhone:

  1. Launch the App Store app.
  2. Tap on your profile icon in the top-right.
  3. Scroll down until you see your available updates. Check if Facebook has one, and hit Update next to it.
  4. You can also tap on Update All to update everything at once.

Toggle Airplane Mode on and off again

If you are still facing this problem, switching Airplane Mode on and then off again may fix the problem.

How to toggle Airplane Mode on and off

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Toggle on Airplane Mode.
  3. Wait a few seconds.
  4. Toggle off Airplane Mode.

Restart your iPhone

This may be something to do with your iPhone. Restarting fixes about 90% of all my tech problems. Try restarting your iPhone to fix Facebook sign-in error 2.

How to restart an iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Shut Down.
  4. Drag the power slider to the right.
  5. Wait for your phone to turn off.
  6. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Check your internet connection

Another reason for Facebook throwing error code 2 might be that your internet is down. Go into any other app or website and see if it’s working. If it isn’t, chances are you’re having internet issues. Those operating over Wi-Fi or LAN can check the router and see if it’s connected to the internet.

You should probably try restarting the router, too. Some routers have reset buttons, and others can be restarted using an official app. If you can’t count on these options, simply unplug the power cord from your modem/router. Wait about one minute. Then replug the cord.

If you are using a VPN, turn it off and try again.

If you’re trying to use Facebook over cellular, ensure that Use Cellular Data is on for Facebook.

How to turn on mobile data on iPhone:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Make sure Cellular Data is toggled on.

Check if Facebook is down

You might not be the only one experiencing this Facebook error! If the social network isn’t working for you, maybe it’s a site-wide issue. You could try accessing Facebook through another browser or device, and see if the error is present there as well. Otherwise, you can check on a website like Down Detector, which will let you know if there’s a problem with Facebook. If there is, you can do nothing but wait it out.

Reset Network Settings

If everything seems okay on Facebook end, Facebook sign-in error 2 might be due to network connection issue. Resetting the network settings on your iPhone might fix this problem. Please note doing so will erase your network settings. For example, your Wi-Fi settings (your passwords, etc) will be removed. Your content will not be deleted.

How to reset network settings on iPhone

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Reset Network Settings.

Delete and reinstall Facebook

You may want to delete the Facebook app and then reinstall it, if you are using the app to access Facebook. Follow these steps:

Remove the app from your iPhone

  1. Touch and hold the Facebook app icon.
  2. Select Delete App.
  3. Select Delete to confirm.

Reinstall the app

  1. Open the App Store app.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Search Facebook.
  4. Tap the cloud icon to download and install again.

Facebook will be installed again. Now try logging into Facebook and see if you experience the error code 2 issue.
