There are several things that can cause a personal hotspot connection to stop working. Instant Hotspot is part of Apple’s Continuity feature. Instant Hotspot will let you share the cellular data connection of your iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max with your Mac. However, several users are reporting issues.

What is Instant Hotspot?

Although Personal Hotspot and Instant Hotspot offer similar functionalities, they are different. With Personal Hotspot, you have to enter your hotspot password to connect and you can use your iPhone 18 Pro’s cellular connection with Mac and Windows computers. However, Instant Hotspot offers more practicality, it also offers faster connectivity and you do not need to enter a password instead it uses your Apple Account for authentication. Apple calls this Instant Hotspot because this Hotspot is always on and ready.

This short article offers several tips for you to use if Instant Hotspot is not working on iPhone 18 Pro. These tips will be also useful if you are having issues with Personal Hotspot.

You may see various error messages, for instance:

  • Remote hotspot failure.
  • Unable to start Personal Hotspot.

Before we continue, please ensure that:

  • Your iPhone’s plan includes tethering, meaning your carrier supports Personal Hotspot. If you are not sure, contact your carrier to verify that your wireless plan supports this. If Personal Hotspot is dimmed or unavailable, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure that Cellular Data is turned on.
  • You log into the same Apple Account on your iPhone and your Mac.
  • You enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your iPhone and your Mac. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, then go to Settings > Bluetooth. On your Mac, click the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar, then click the Bluetooth status menu in Control Center.
  • Your iPhone and your Mac are within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other.
  • If you use a VPN on either device, make sure its configuration doesn’t prevent local networking. Apple lists this among the things to check for Instant Hotspot, noting that it may interfere with some Continuity features.

Still, if Instant Hotspot is not working, try these things first:

How to fix Instant Hotspot problems on iPhone 18 Pro

Please try the following steps. Also note that after each step, check to see if your issue is resolved.

  1. Update your devices:

    • Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. You can do so wirelessly by going to Settings > General > Software Update
    • Update your computer also. You can check updates by going to System Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Restart your devices. It is simple but may fix the problem. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Shut Down, then drag the slider. Press and hold the side button to turn it back on. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart.
  3. Turn off Wi-Fi on your iPhone and wait a few seconds and turn it back on by going to Settings > Wi-Fi. And turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone and wait a few seconds and then turn it back on by going to Settings > Bluetooth.
  4. On your Mac, disable Wi-Fi and wait a few seconds and then enable it by clicking the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar. And disable Bluetooth and wait a few seconds and then enable it by clicking the Bluetooth status menu in Control Center.
  5. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name], scroll down and tap Sign Out. You will be offered a choice here — choose Sign Out But Don’t Erase. Apple says the other option, Erase this iPhone, removes data such as your notes, calendars, reminders and data that hasn’t yet synced with iCloud from the device when you sign out. Apple also advises making sure you have an up-to-date iCloud backup before you sign out. Then enter the passcode for that device or enter your Apple Account password. And then sign back in. If you enable two-factor authentication, you will be asked to enter the verification code.
  6. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click your name, then click Sign Out. You will be asked if you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data. Select the appropriate checkboxes, then click Keep a Copy. Click Sign Out. And sign back in.
  7. On your iPhone, reset your network settings by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note that this action will remove your Wi-Fi passwords etc.
  8. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Network in the sidebar. Control-click Wi-Fi, then choose Make Service Inactive. Now Wi-Fi will be inactive. Now Control-click Wi-Fi and choose Make Service Active. If you are still unable to connect, then select Bluetooth and follow the same steps: First, make it “Inactive” and then revert back.
  9. If your Mac still won’t connect, try Maximize Compatibility on your iPhone: go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Maximize Compatibility. Apple notes that Maximize Compatibility may reduce performance for devices connected to your Personal Hotspot when turned on.

Still, you are having this problem? Then you may want to contact Apple.
