Your iPhone display keeps flickering and you don’t know why. The screen flashes, changes colors, blacks out, or something else that’s very frustrating. An iPhone with a glitching screen can be a real hassle. In this article, I’ll explain why your iPhone screen is flickering and show you how to fix the problem for good!

Why is my iPhone screen flickering?

As annoying as a case of screen flickering is, it can be caused by several things:

  • Display settings
  • Malfunctioning app
  • Software issues
  • Physical damage

How to troubleshoot the flickering screen on an iPhone

You’re probably wondering how to make the flickering stop. Here are a few troubleshooting steps.

Fix 1: Turn off Auto-Brightness

I had success fixing my flickering iPhone screen by turning off Auto-Brightness.

Here’s how to turn off Auto-Brightness on your iPhone:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Display & Text Size.
  4. Turn off the switch next to Auto-Brightness!

After turning off Auto-Brightness, check if the screen has stopped flickering. If the issue persists, don’t worry—there are more troubleshooting steps to try.

Fix 2: Check your visual settings

Blurred backgrounds on your iPhone can make text hard to read and even give the screen the appearance of flickering as it navigates between apps and your background. Adjusting this feature can go a long way toward fixing your iPhone flickering issue.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Display & Text Size.
  4. Turn off the switch next to Reduce Transparency!

Fix 3: Is An App Causing The Problem?

Do you know if your iPhone screen is flickering only when you open a specific app? If so, there’s a possibility that app is causing the glitch.

There are a couple things you can do to try and fix the problem, and we’ll walk you through those steps below.

Close The Problem App

If you think an app is malfunctioning, the first thing to do is close it and see if the problem persists.

Here’s how to close an app:

  • If your iPhone has a Home button, double-press it to launch the app switcher. If your iPhone doesn’t have a Home button, swipe up from the very bottom to the center of the screen to launch the app switcher.
  • Once the app switcher is open, use one finger to swipe the problematic app up and off the top of the screen. You’ll know the app is closed when it no longer appears in the app switcher.

Now that you’ve closed the app, tap on its icon on the Home screen to see if it is working without glitching. If your iPhone screen still flickers when you open the app, try the next solution.

Check For An App Update

It’s possible an app is making your screen flicker because it’s out of date. App developers regularly release updates to introduce new features, fix known bugs, and make sure their app runs smoothly on the latest version of iOS.

Here’s how to check for app updates:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to see pending updates. If you see the problematic app listed, tap Update.

After updating, try opening the app again and see if the problem has been fixed. If the issue persists, move on to the next solution.

Delete The Problem App

Deleting and reinstalling an app can give it a fresh start. Sometimes, app files can become corrupted, causing problems when you try to use it.

Here’s how to delete an app on your iPhone:

  1. Press and hold on the icon of the app you want to delete.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. Tap Delete App.
  4. Tap Delete to confirm your decision!

Now that you’ve uninstalled the app, go to the App Store and tap on the Search tab at the bottom of the screen. Type in the name of your app, then tap the Reinstall button to its right.

Once it has finished installing, reopen the app to see if the problem has resolved. If the app continues to glitch, you may have to find an alternative.

Fix 4: hard reset your iPhone

By hard resetting your iPhone, you’ll force it to abruptly turn off and back on. Sometimes crashed software can cause screen flickering issue, so hard resetting your iPhone may fix the problem.

Here’s how to hard reset your iPhone:

  • If your iPhone has a Home button, simultaneously press and hold the power button and Home button until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  • If your iPhone doesn’t have a Home button, quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button, then press and hold the Side button until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears.

Fix 5: Update your software

It’s possible an iOS bug is causing the screen to flicker. Outdated iOS can cause a variety of software issues on your iPhone, so it’s important to update when you can.

Here’s how to check for iOS updates:

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Tap Update Now if a new iOS update is available.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Fix 6: Repair your screen

Unfortunately, if your iPhone is still flickering, you’ll probably have to look into repair options. It’s possible that an internal connector has been damaged or become dislodged. This is especially true if your iPhone screen started flickering after a dropped.

Contact Apple support for repair options. Apple offers mail, phone, online, and in-person help. Make sure to set up an appointment if you plan on going into your local Apple Store!
