When you think of playful camera filters, Snapchat is probably the first app that comes to mind. But did you know that you can make your own interactive avatars on your iPhone using Memojis?

The term Memoji is a portmanteau of the words "me" and "emoji" that takes the form of an avatar that you can use to personalize messages on Apple’s mobile hardware. These clever talking heads let you record your voice and facial expressions onto animated characters and then send them to your friends. Here’s how to make and send a memoji on iPhone.

Make Memoji on iPhone

  1. Go to the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. In a conversation, tap the Add button (+).
  3. Tap Memoji. (You may have to swipe up.)
  4. Tap the add icon (+) to display the menu, and then tap Memoji.
  5. Either tap an existing memoji (swipe left to see more) or swipe right and tap New Memoji (+) to create a custom emoji.
  6. If you tap New Memoji, the memoji builder appears. Under your face are attributes such as Skin, Hairstyle, Head Shape, Mouth, Ears, Eyewear Headwear, and Clothing; swipe through the list making your choices.
  7. When you finish and tap Done, Messages adds the memoji to your memoji list.
