Find out how to tell if iMessage is down, what to do if iMessage stops working on your iPad. We will help you fix all your iPad iMessage problems.

What Is iMessage And How Does It Work?

iMessage is a secure messaging service that you can use to send and receive text messages in the Messages app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.

What Are The Green Bubbles and Blue Bubbles On iPads?

When you open the Messages app, you’ll notice that when you send text messages, sometimes they are sent in a blue bubble and other times they are sent in a green bubble.

When you communicate with others who also use iMessage on an Apple device, the texts appear in blue bubbles. (SMS, MMS, and RCS messages appear in green bubbles.)

Diagnose Your Problem With iMessage

When you’re experiencing an issue with iMessage, the first step is to determine whether the problem is with one contact or whether iMessage isn’t working with any of the contacts on your iPad. If iMessage isn’t working with just one of your contacts, the problem is most likely on their end. If iMessage isn’t working with any of your contacts, the problem is most likely on your end.

Why Is My iMessage Not Working On My iPad?

There are lots of reasons why iMessage can stop working on iPad: it could be an issue with Apple’s iMessage server, a problem with the internet connection, or your settings could need adjusting. Here are simple troubleshooting steps that will solve the most common issues with iMessage on your iPad.

How To Fix iMessage On Your iPad

1. Make sure iMessage is on and set up correctly on your iPad

The first thing you should do if iMessage is not working on your iPad is to ensure that iMessage is set up properly. Go to Settings -> Apps -> Messages, then turn on iMessage.

If when you get to this page you see a message suggesting that iMessage is “Waiting for activation” or “Activation unsuccessful”, then read this article: What to do when iMessage won’t activate on your iPad.

If iMessage is switched on and there is no message about activation, check that your iPad is set up correctly to receive iMessages: tap to open the menu item called ‘Send & Receive’. Here, you’ll see a list of the phone numbers and email addresses that are configured to send and receive iMessages on your iPad. Look under the section titled ‘Start New Conversations From’, and if there isn’t a checkmark next to your phone number or Email, tap on your phone number or Email to activate iMessage for your number or Email.

2. Turn iMessage Off, Reboot, And Then Back On

Go to Settings -> Messages and tap the button next to iMessage to turn iMessage off on your iPad. Next, go to Settings -> General -> Shut Down, then drag the slider to turn off your iPad. Turn your device back on, go back to Settings -> Messages, and turn iMessage back on. This simple fix works a lot of the time.

3. Check Your Internet Connection

Remember that iMessage only works with a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection, so let’s make sure your iPad is actually connected to the internet. Open up Safari on your device and try navigating to any website. If the website doesn’t load or Safari says you’re not connected to the internet, your iMessages won’t send either.

Hint: If the internet isn’t working on your iPad, you might be connected to a Wi-Fi network that doesn’t have a good internet connection. Try turning off Wi-Fi and resending your iMessage. If that works, the problem was with Wi-Fi, not with iMessage.

4. Sign Out Of iMessage and Sign Back In

Go back to Settings -> Apps -> Messages and tap to open ‘Send & Receive’.

)Next, tap where it says ‘Apple Account: (your Apple Account)’ and choose ‘Sign Out’.![Log Back In With your Apple Account details and try sending an iMessage to one of your friends with an iPad or iPhone.

5. Check For An iPadOS Update

If your software isn’t up to date there may be a bug stopping iMessage from working properly. Go to Settings -> General -> Software Updateand check to see if there is an iPadOS update for your iPad. In my experience, most iMessage issues are caused by a bug in iPadOS, and software updates always fix the issues.

6. Check Time Zone settings

Some iPad users have found that they had problems sending iMessages when the time zone wasn’t set to update automatically. It’s not clear what was causing the problem, perhaps it’s to do with the carrier settings.

Go to Settings -> General -> Date & Time and make sure the toggle next to Set Automatically is switched on.

7. Check if iMessage is down

It’s possible that the server that iMessage is run from is down – which could mean that iMessage isn’t working for anyone. This is rare, but it does happen occasionally.

You can check if any of Apple’s online services are experiencing outages by checking the System Status page (U.S.) or System Status page (U.K.). Click the to see all the services and scroll down to iMessage

On this page, Apple gives you a heads-up about any services with planned maintenance work, along with a report of any recently resolved issues in any of its services. However, if your issue has only just appeared, bear in mind that the website’s update frequency tends to be measured in minutes, not seconds – perhaps as many as 30 on occasion – so the problem may not have been spotted yet.

8. Reset Network Settings

Issues with network connectivity can also cause problems with iMessage, and often times restoring your iPad’s network settings back to factory defaults can resolve an issue with iMessage. To reset your iPad’s network settings, go to Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPad -> Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.

A word of warning: Before you do this, make sure you know your Wi-Fi passwords, because Reset Network Settings will erase all of the saved Wi-Fi networks on your iPad. After your iPad reboots, you’ll have to re-enter your Wi-Fi passwords at home and at work. Your iPad’s APN and VPN settings will also be reset to factory defaults.

9. Contact Apple Support

In my experience, there are rare occasions when all of the above troubleshooting steps wouldn’t fix a problem with iMessage, and i had to escalate the issue to Apple engineers who would personally resolve the issue.

If you do decide to visit an Apple Store, do yourself a favor and call ahead to make an appointment with the Genius Bar so you don’t have to wait around to get help.

Conclusion

I hope this article has helped you to resolve the issue you’ve been having with iMessage. I look forward to hearing from you about your experiences with iMessage in the comments section below.
