Apple’s Weather app makes it easy to check the weather for your current location and other places around the world. You can view the upcoming hourly and 10-day forecast, see severe weather information, and more. You can also use Weather widgets to check the forecast and other weather conditions at a glance on your iPhone Home Screen. The only problem is that it doesn’t always work. If your iPhone’s Weather app isn’t working, this article offers some troubleshooting steps that may help.

Why is the Weather app on iPhone not working?

The iPhone Weather app is a handy feature that displays the weather forecast for a list of locations when you open the app on your phone’s screen. When bad weather looms, this can be a lifesaver. But the app doesn’t help you if it won’t load, crashes, or gives you outdated forecasts. Here are some possible reasons the Weather app might not be working on your iPhone:

  • outdated iPhone operating system
  • your iPhone isn’t connected to the Internet
  • Location Services turned off
  • outdated or corrupted Weather app
  • glitchy weather widget on your home screen

What to do when the Weather app on your iPhone isn’t working

Here are simple fixes to try when your iPhone Weather app won’t work properly:

Restart the Weather app

The first thing we should try when the Weather app is not working is to force close it and restart it.

Double-click your Home button (iPhones without Face ID) or swipe up from the very bottom to the center of the screen (iPhones with Face ID). Then, close the Weather app by swiping it up and off the top of the screen. Reopen the app and check if it’s working now.

Check your network connection

For the Weather app to reach Apple’s weather servers to display the latest weather updates, it needs a working internet connection. Ensure that you are connected to a working Wi-Fi or cellular network so that the Weather app can update. If you are experiencing connection problems, try the following:

  • Turn on Airplane Mode and then turn it off.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi modem/router.
  • If you are using a VPN, turn them off and test again.

If you are having problems with the Weather app when you are connected to the Internet over cellular only, the problem could be that the Weather app is prevented from using the cellular data. Check this setting and enable it if needed. Go to Settings and tap Cellular or Mobile Data. Scroll down and find Weather and ensure that it is enabled. If it is already enabled, turn it off and then on again.

Restart your iPhone

Restarting your iPhone could clear out any errors that are causing your Weather app not to work. If your iPhone has a Home button, press and hold the power button. For iPhones without a Home button, press and hold the side button and either volume button.

Release the button or buttons when slide to power off appears on the screen. Swipe the power icon from left to right to shut down your iPhone.

Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the power or side button again until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Your iPhone will turn back on again shortly.

Update your iPhone operating system

Updating iOS is another way to fix persistent issues with Weather not working on iPhone. Open Settings and tap General > Software Update. Tap Update Now if an iOS update is available. After the update is complete, try using the Weather app again.

Check if Weather is allowed to use Location Services

Weather uses Location Services to get the forecast for your current location. To make sure Location Services is turned on, go to Settings> Privacy & Security > Location Services > Weather. You will see the following options:

  • Never
  • Ask Next Time Or When I Share
  • While Using the App
  • Always

If Never is selected, Weather and Widgets won’t work. If you select Ask Next Time or When I Share, you will be asked permission each time you open the app. This may not be ideal. If you want the Weather app and Weather Widgets to work, the best option is to select While Using the App. While you are here, turn on Precise Location to increase the accuracy of the forecast in your current location.

Check if Weather servers are up and running

Apple’s weather servers may be experiencing outages. Related to this, Apple uses other service data providers to provide you with the weather content. They may also be having issues. This will cause the Weather app to stop working. If you see a blank page,, this may be the issue. Further, if you have had intermittent issues with Weather, this again could be the cause.

The good news is that you can check if this is the problem easily. Visit Apple’s System Status page. If the system status page indicate a problem with the Weather service, wait for Apple to fix it.

Remove and reinstall the Weather app

The Weather app may start working if you delete it from your iPhone and then redownload it. Press and hold the Weather app until the quick action menu opens. Tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete. Then open the App Store and redownload Weather.

Reset Location Services

If your iPhone’s Weather app is not accurate, Location Services may not be working. Thankfully, you can reset all of your Location Services settings to fix the problem. Resetting will restore your location and privacy settings to the factory defaults.

To do this, open Settings and tap General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.

You’ll need to enter your iPhone passcode to reset your Location Services. This will change your location and privacy settings back to the way they were when you first got your iPhone. Do this, and then try using the Weather app again.

Send a report about the weather

You can report the weather in your location if it doesn’t match what’s shown in the Weather app.

  1. Open the Weather app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Edit Cities button, tap the More button, then tap Report an Issue.
  3. Tap the options that best describe the weather conditions in your location, then tap Submit.
