This issue happened to me yesterday. Suddenly, when I launched the Phone app on my iPhone, no recent phone calls were displayed, even though I had dozens of recent calls. I tried to refresh the page by swiping down, but the iPhone was still not showing my recent call history.

This is a strange issue that prevents you from not only viewing calls you have received or made, but also viewing missed calls you have received on your iPhone.

Your iPhone records all calls. Your call history, also called recent calls, has two viewing options: All (outgoing and incoming calls) and Missed. The call history section (recent tab) allows you to see a list of people (your contacts and other numbers) who have called you.

Checking the call history on your iPhone is simple. Just open the Phone app, and then tap on Recents tab at the bottom of the screen. A list of recent calls will appear. Sometimes, when you open Phone app and select Recent tab, you may see some of the calls, but not all of them. This problem can be very frustrating because, for instance, if you cannot see your missed calls, you do not know who called and you will not be able to return the call. If you cannot see call history on your iPhone or iPad, there are a few fixes that you may try.

In this article, I explain the steps that I used to fix my problem.

Before we start troubleshooting, it’s worth noting that you can see the 100 most recent calls and groups. Also, note that some recent calls and missed calls can be grouped if they are from the same person or number.

Please note that if you have multiple devices and if you are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on all of your devices, and if you answer a call on a different device (Mac, or iPad), these calls will not show up in the recent list. Furthermore, if you’re in an area without cellular network coverage, the call you receive will go directly to your voicemail and the recent call list will not show these. If this is the case, your voicemails will also be delayed. And lastly, this issue may also occur on your iPad.

Troubleshooting Missing recent calls on iPhone and iPad

Try the following steps:

  1. Restart your iPhone: Try this first. Simply restart your device to fix this problem. This is a very simple process. Here is how you can do this:
    • iPhone XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, or later and iPad without a Home button models: Press and hold the volume up or down button and the side button together until you see the Power Off slider. Slide the slider and wait for your phone to turn off. Then, press and hold the side button again to turn it on.
    • Other iPhone and iPad models: Press and hold the power button (side or top) until you see the power off slider appear. Drag the slider. Wait 30 seconds. And then press and hold the power button again to turn on your device until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Force close the Phone app and restart: You can close the Phone app and restart again. Do not worry, this will not delete anything. Here is how:
    • Go to your Home screen and swipe up (if you have an iPhone with a Home button then double-press the Home button), this will reveal the last used app previews. You may swipe left or right. Find the Phone preview icon and swipe up on the Phone’s preview icon to quit. Then reopen the phone app.
  3. Update your iPhone: A new update may be available. Check for updates and make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of the iOS software. If not, a new update may fix this problem. You can easily update your iPhone wirelessly. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for updates.
  4. Disable and enable Cellular: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular and toggle off Cellular Data wait several seconds, and turn it back on.
  5. Enable and disable Airplane Mode: On your iPhone, tap Settings and turn on Airplane mode and wait several seconds and turn it off again.
  6. Reset your network settings: This will erase all of the network-related settings on your iPhone, including your VPN settings, Wi-Fi passwords, etc. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > and then tap Reset Network Settings (you may have to enter your passcode).
  7. Reset all settings: If resetting network settings does not work, try resetting all settings. This will restore your device to the default settings. But your data and content will not be deleted. Simply go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings and then follow the onscreen instructions.
  8. Check for a carrier settings update: Carrier updates are small updates that are different from iOS updates. This update usually occurs automatically when the carrier releases a new version. However, you can manually check for updates by going to Settings > General > About. A popup will appear if there is an update. Tap Update.
  9. Contact you’re Carrier: if you still can’t access your iPhone’s call history, contact your carrier. They can typically show you call logs that go further back in history. Not all providers have policies that allow them to do this, however, so your results may vary.
  10. Contact Apple Support: If recent calls are still not showing on your iPhone, you may want to contact Apple support. Note that Apple also offers live chat support.
