It is totally normal if you do not know where your iPhone’s microphones are located on the device. Your iPhone has multiple built-in microphones. It may be a little tricky to locate them. This guide explains the locations of the microphones on your iPhone.

The microphone in your iPhone does a lot. It is essential to phone calls and FaceTime, of course, but in addition, many apps rely on the microphone to record audio or listen for commands. Siri needs the mic to hear you as well. Without functioning microphones, people won’t hear you when you make phone calls or FaceTime calls, or Siri will not be able to detect your voice.

Knowing where the microphones are located on your iPhone can be very useful for many troubleshooting purposes. For example, if the microphone isn’t working at all — or the audio it’s capturing is muffled, fuzzy, or unclear, you may need to locate them on your iPhone to clean any debris from the openings to fix your problems.

Microphones are small round openings, embedded in small openings. This is why it may not be easy to locate them.

Most modern iPhones, like the iPhone 15, have four microphones: two at the bottom, one at the back, and one in the front. Older models have fewer microphones. Here is where they are located:

iPhone 15, 15 Pro, 14, 14 Pro, 13, 13 Pro, 12, 12 Pro, 11, 11 Pro, XS, XR, X, 8, 8 Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 6S, and 6S Plus microphones

These models have 3 microphone locations:

  1. The first set of microphones are located at the bottom of the phone (look for the series of small holes) (bottom microphone).
  2. The third microphone is located on the front of the phone (front microphone).
  3. Another microphone is located on the back of the phone — the small pinpoint-sized hole near the camera lenses (rear microphone).

  1. The first microphone is located on the bottom of your phone. This one is used for calls.
  2. The second microphone is located on the front side at the top of your iPhone, embedded into the earpiece, right next to the selfie camera. This one may be used for, along with others, capturing audio when recording videos. This microphone is also used to pick up voice commands.
  3. And the third microphone is located on the back side of the device, built into the rear camera. Again this one is used for capturing audio when recording videos.

iPhone 4 and 4s microphones

iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S have dual microphones built into the device.

  1. The first microphone is located on the bottom of the phone next to the 30-pin connector. This microphone is used for phone calls, audio recordings or talking to Siri.
  2. The second microphone is located on the top of the phone next to the headphone jack. This microphone is used for noise cancellation.
